![]() ![]() The modern master of butterflies is, and has been for a long time, Michael LaFosse, who has developed a basic structure and approach that he has used for tens, if not hundreds, of distinct creations. Many of them (many of my own) are heavy and ponderous, which may capture physical features – legs, wings, antennae – but capturing the grace, lightness, and delicacy of the real subject is quite the artistic challenge. I’ve also made a few myself.īut the humble butterfly is also a deceptively difficult subject to capture in origami. And there are many origami butterfly designs out there, notably Yoshizawa’s iconic creation. It is so simple, because all you really need are two wings: one can make a quite recognizable one with just two folds. Hang the mobile near a bright window, and watch the light stream through the tissue paper holes of the butterfly wings.One of the oldest, simplest, and to my mind, most deceptively difficult of all origami subjects is the butterfly. Cut a piece of yarn or string, and thread it under the pipe cleaner, and tie at the top in a knot.Cut a pipe cleaner in half, and thread through the top holes, and twist.Make 2 additional holes on the opposite butterfly, so that they line up. Make 2 holes at the top of one butterfly for antennas. ![]() Continue gluing the butterflies together, until all of the tissue paper square sides are glued together.Bend the butterflies slightly down the middle to make a slight crease.Once all wings are covered with tissue paper, glue two of the butterfly wings together, with the tissue paper side on the inside.Make sure all four of your butterflies are covered.Cover all holes on the back of the butterfly.Place tissue paper squares over the holes.Apply glue to the back of each butterfly wing around the holes.Using a hole punch, make multiple holes in each of the butterfly wings.I chose purple cardstock, but any bright color will make a beautiful butterfly.Print and cut the butterfly templates out of cardstock.If you're looking for a fun and easy paper craft that is certain to bring a smile to your kid's face, this is it!
